Where Art Meets The Wave – Inspiring Cornish Artwork on a Radical Canvas
Welcome to our Home page! Following on from the Around Cornwall in 38 Churns project which raised an astonishing £50,000 in 2022 for Cornwall Hospice Care, volunteer fundraiser Sue Dennett is championing a new artistic project for 2024/2025 called Where Art Meets the Wave.
What is Where Art Meets The Wave?
This new art project will see local Cornish artists take one of 40+ wooden belly boards specially made for the project by Fyne Boat Kits of Kendal and Derek Thompson of Surf Classic Boards, and use their own inspiration and skills to turn these simple boards into desirable works of art.
We’ve asked our artists to complete their work by April 2025 so that through the summer of 2025 we can exhibit all 40+ finished artworks together at a number of locations in Cornwall, ideally with each location exhibiting the whole collection for a number of weeks. These locations will be announced later in the project.
In parallel to the exhibitions, you’ll have the opportunity to place a bid in our online auction organised by Lay’s Auctioneers of Penzance, to make these unique artworks your own! Bidding will open on 1st July 2025.
Thursday 25th September 2025 will see the culmination of the project with a final exhibition of all the artworks together coinciding with the final day of the auction, and we hope to be able to announce the total amount raised shortly after the auction closes at 8pm on the night.
Whats the aim?
The aim, as with the 38 Churns project which went before, is to raise money for Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care who run the two adult hospices in Hayle and St Austell.
Sue Dennett has been a volunteer raising money for this vital charity for 40 years and is passionate about ensuring that our hospices are there providing palliative and end of life care for all those in Cornwall that need them. Here are just a couple of quotes about the incredible 38 churns project.
Get Involved
Artists
All our belly boards have now found their temporary home each with a local Cornish artist, so we’re no longer able to accept new artists.
Exhibitions
We’ve now organised a variety of venues in Cornwall who have kindly agreed to host these amazing and unique artworks. You can find out what those venues are and whose boards each is hosting by visiting our Boards Locations webpage.
Online Auction
The Online Auction for all the boards is now LIVE hosted by Lay’s Auctioneers of Penzance, so you can now place bids on your favourites. Visit our Artists & their boards page and click the ‘Bid in Auction’ button under each board to take you direct to bidding on that board. Alternatively to see the whole auction and all the lots, head to Lay’s Auctioneers site and find Where Art Meets The Wave in their upcoming auctions or click the button below.
Sponsors
Rodda’s Creamery have sponsored the making of the belly boards and Lay’s Auctioneers will host our auction. Fyne Boat Kits of Kendal have been instrumental in this project, precision cutting each board ready for finishing. Each board has then been finished by Surf Classic ready for the artists to work their magic. Find out more about our sponsors here.
We’d love to hear from more Cornish businesses who’d like to be part of this unique and unusual project and ultimately help fund many hours of nursing care for Cornwall Hospice Care.
Please have a chat with us about how you could be part of Where Art Meets The Wave and the sponsorship packages we have on offer.
